Hey friends and family,I wanted to give everyone an update on my cancer journey. In just four days, I’ll be undergoing what’s called a radical robot-assisted prostatectomy. This will be my first true surgery. I broke my hand once and had a rod put in, but this is different. I’ll be under anesthesia for about 3–4 hours while they remove my prostate and nearby lymph nodes so they can better understand the cancer and determine the next steps.
I’m praying the surgeon is able to remove everything and that radiation or chemotherapy won’t be necessary. Fingers crossed.
After surgery, the real work begins — healing, rebuilding, and getting healthy again. They’ve told me recovery could take anywhere from six months to a year, but if all goes well, I should start feeling like myself again in about 4–6 weeks. I’m holding onto that.
Being told you have cancer is something that shakes you to your core. It makes your mind wander to places you don’t want it to go. I’ve thought about my kids, Sherri, my parents, and future grandkids. I’ve thought about time. About what matters. About how fast life moves.
If I could give one piece of advice to the men reading this: get your bloodwork done. Get your PSA levels checked regularly. I blamed a lot on “just getting older.” Don’t ignore the numbers.
I’m incredibly grateful for the support system around me. After my first blog post, so many people reached out — friends who’ve walked this road themselves, families who’ve stood beside loved ones, and others currently fighting their own battles. Those messages have meant more than you know.
I truly believe I’m in good hands with one of the best oncologic surgeons around. This journey started back in late August, and it’s felt long already — but I’m ready to face the next step.
When this is behind me, one thing is certain: I’m getting back in the gym and taking my health even more seriously. No excuses.
Sherri and I also want to thank everyone for supporting Keeping Up Travel. Our brand continues to grow every day, and that’s because of you — your shares, your referrals, your encouragement. We see it. We feel it. We’re grateful for it.We love you all very much.
Nick
